The bookcases (Sauder Model 426421) are traditionally beautiful with a rustic woodgrain-style veneer and an clever, elegant design that is easy to put together relatively quickly. The instructions are very easy to follow and well-illustrated (and funny!) The design elements are beautiful but also structurally-functional, so every step of the process of putting them together feels purposeful and necessary. I like the nice, thick particle-board shelves, though I was a bit disappointed to find that they don't quite hold the weight of my home library without bowing in the middle. Like most particle-board furniture, they do seem to have a bit of flexibility to them. I recommend putting the pieces together on a blanket or carpet to prevent scratching the veneer, and while I suppose you could put them together by yourself, it's way easier to have a helper to hold the frame square while putting on the two halves together and adding the backing. I also recommend having a damp cloth on hand to wipe the styrofoam packing residue off the pieces as you pull them from the box (unless you like a cerused look, I'm not judging.). Lastly, don't do what I did and load the shelves all willy-nilly; instead, try to load from the bottom up, and stick to the weight-limits specified in the product description. I ordered the Vintage Oak finish, and it's a lovely dark, neutral brown. It's much less orange/warm-toned than the product photos, so keep that in mind when deciding on a finish.. Rachel.
