A lot of people are disappointed that the planters come as raw steel. Just spray it with a mix of salt, vinegar and peroxide... probably salt & vinegar would work too. I just googled a recipe (can't remember which one now), and it will "rust" within hours. Only advice, lay it on it's side and spray (then turn it when it's dry and repeat) to avoid drip lines.. jill. LOVE these planters! We renovated our exterior to be a dramatic black & cedar & these planters were perfect! They are worth every penny especially when I considered my last planters (half barrels) were used for over 20 years, I expect to have these for a long time. To the people who complained about the weld dots half way down the side, this is needed in the construction & disappears once rust is established. For those complaining about the rust on their driveway, I recommend that you start the rusting (the first phase is the messiest) on plastic tarps to allow them to catch the messy rusty water. I followed their directional video & it worked great. I started them on the tarps in a garage & then put them outside in the rain, again on the tarps, to continue the rusting. Since moving them to my driveway they have continued to rust beautifully with very little run off. I had put a drip tray under the longer planter but it was not necessary. We did add pivoting screw feet on the bottom (tack welded on) as we have an uneven driveway. Worked GREAT. We get so many compliments on these planters. I absolutely LOVE them.. Deanna.
