Porch Swings

I found a porch swing bed similar to this one when I was in grad school at Ole Miss 8 years ago. I knew whenever I had a home of my own, I would have to get one of these kinds of outdoor swings.

My grandma used to have a porch swing that I would spend lots of time on as a kid. She has a screened in porch with a swing like this I would spend hours doing homework or reading books on when I was younger. I wanted somewhere like that in my own home.

I wanted the porch swing to be a welcoming place for me and the baby to come out to. I left out comfortable pillows and blankets nearby so we could wrap up if needed. Rain or shine, you can find us swinging in our outdoor swing at least once a day!

I have seen beautiful porch swings all over Charleston and drew inspiration from other homes in the area.

Growing up, I spent my summers at my grandparents’ home in the NC mountains. They had a porch swing that was hung at an angle and I have so many fond memories of sitting and chatting with my grandma on the swing while enjoying the view. I always wanted to recreate that in my own home and our front porch was the perfect spot! We made sure to hang our swing at an angle, just like theirs. It's the perfect touch!

I love switching it out with different outdoor pillows based on the different seasons. I also love to have a little tray out there to hold my coffee or snack.

I like having the seat cushion for comfort and a little color. My husband can very much attest to the fact that I love to accessorize with pillows!

I put out a few outdoor pillows that can withstand being left out all year long so that it is always cozy and welcoming. I chose neutral colors so that they would work well throughout the change of seasons. I keep the surrounding plants and roses trimmed so that they decorate the area around the swing without getting in the way.

On the porch, we also have a rocking chair and round garden end table. To add even more comfort, we added a few outdoor throw pillows.

I try to keep our accessories simple and limit them to a bench cushion and two pillows or simple pillows like I have now. I love the splash of color the pillows add and by keeping it simple, our entire family of four can sit on the swing together!

I love to read out there in the morning. My kids love to swing on it and act like little monkeys.

Any time I can get away for a minute. I love being outside, so now that the weather is warm, any chance I get!

We use the porch swing all the time! To read a book, rock the baby, listen to the wind in the trees, as well as a place to sit and catch up with neighbors! Our family from California also comes out to visit and they all love having the porch swing to sit on. It adds a welcoming feature to the home that lets us all feel like we are "getting away" from the day to day!

My husband and I spend the most time out on the porch on beautiful spring and fall nights. We bring out a couple of beers, books, and watch the sun set.

We love to sit out on the swing after dinner and chat with the kids. It's also the perfect spot to stop and take a break when we're doing yard work!

Probably sharing a glass of wine with my husband out there once our kids have gone to bed.

Definitely being at my grandma's house. I love her screened in porch because it felt like a fort. Then to have a swing inside of my fort was pretty much the best thing ever. I would camp out there all afternoon!

While we have only lived in this home for a short time, I know that I will always look back on the sweet memories of our first born swinging away with me on that porch swing. Whether he was tired, happy, cranky, or needing some cuddles, the swinging on the porch always seemed to calm him. With how hectic life can seem sometimes, taking even just a short moment together to connect without distractions is such a gift as a busy mom. While I look back at the fond memories we already have, I also look forward to the many more that are still to come.

Last Halloween, we spent the whole night outside on the porch, handing out candy, listening to spooky music, and playing cards. It was so much fun to see all the little kids in costume!

I love when we get one on one time with each of our kids out on the swing. They love to chat with us about their day, ask questions about how the world works, and play I Spy. I love having the quiet time with them to hear their thoughts and feelings!
