Thesd are MAPLE, NOT OAK (I ordered & received maple, so that's fine). I ordered 2 newels, they are solidly heavy,but not solid maple though in the base, which has an inner core of plyed maple, with an outer box of maple, done well. The upper portion is a solid 3" post. *However when the newels arrived, they were shipped in a flimsy cardboard box, both of which were torn and battered. Inside, the newel was encased in shrink wrap, with a piece of styrofoam here or there, and a taped cardboard strip around the bottom of the base and each of the big trim areas. When I removed the strips of cardbard, several of the trim pieces were loose or off and moving around. They had been attached to the main newel by tiny 1/2" needles of metal shot through each piece of trim, with NO GLUE (see last picture showing tiny holes the 'needles' were shot through). Naturally, after removing the needle stumps, I tried to place them back on with a suitable adhesive. That resulted in gaps that I now need to try to find a matching maple-coloured wood putty before I can varnish and install the newels. All that said, $85 is better than $400 for a 4" wide trimmed maple newel, so I am overall, satisfied. I would buy them again.. Teralee. . 2022-04-08 13:57:53
